Nothing resets you like the Maldives. One island, one resort, water so clear the boats look like they are floating on air — it is the destination we recommend when clients say they want to truly disappear for a week.

It is not one-size-fits-all, though: resorts range from romantic adults-only hideaways to big family islands with waterslides, and the price difference between them is enormous. Choosing the right island is where we earn our keep.

Things to do in Maldives

  • Sleep over the water — an overwater villa is the signature Maldives experience
  • Snorkel your house reef with turtles and reef sharks metres from your deck
  • Take a seaplane transfer — the views are half the holiday
  • Book a sandbank picnic or sunset dolphin cruise
  • Dive or snorkel with manta rays (best May–November at Hanifaru Bay)

Where to stay

All-inclusive usually makes sense in the Maldives — you are on one island and drinks add up fast. We track which resorts run seaplane-included and half-price-villa specials from South Africa, and match islands to what you care about: house reef, kids facilities, or pure romance.

Our travel tips

From our own trips — the things we tell friends and family.

Budget for the transfer: seaplane or speedboat costs vary hugely by resort and are often the hidden expense.
If snorkelling matters, pick a resort with a genuine house reef — we keep a shortlist.
Combine 5 nights Maldives with a Middle East stopover to break the journey and see two worlds in one trip.

Maldives questions, answered

Do South Africans need a visa for the Maldives?

No pre-arranged visa is needed — all visitors receive a free 30-day visa on arrival with a valid passport, confirmed accommodation and onward ticket. Always confirm current requirements before travelling.

When is the best time to visit the Maldives?

November to April is the dry, calm season with postcard weather. May to October is greener with brief showers — and noticeably better prices, plus manta season. There is no bad time; there is a right time for your budget.

How expensive is a Maldives holiday really?

It varies more than any destination we sell — the same week can cost double at one resort versus its neighbour. With specials, a Maldives package from South Africa can rival a premium Mauritius holiday. Ask us what is on offer for your dates.

Is the Maldives good for families, or just honeymooners?

Both — several islands have superb kids clubs, shallow lagoons and family villas. It is all about choosing the right island, which is exactly what we do.
